After spending about two or three hours trying to work put why my new laptop wouldn't connect to my home wireless network when runnning Ubuntu, I finally discovered what the problem was.

You have to activate the wireless card by sliding the little slidy-button on the front of the machine. Once the light next to the icon that looks like a radio telescope comes on, everything should be fine.
